They were made four times of the year and at baptisms, marriages and funerals. Offerings of money formed a smaller part of clergy income. Tithes were the most important part of their income, allowing them to receive a tenth of agricultural production – corn, barley and rye, and one tenth of newborn animals – calves, piglets, lambs, as well as honey, milk, cheese and so on. The clergy of the parish churches were supported by tithes and offerings. Individuals over the centuries gave lands and money, particularly to support monasteries since monks could not go out into the world and earn money for themselves. Hospitals, run by religious orders, cared for the sick and poor, and gave shelter to travellers.Īs to where the money came from, the Church possessed endowments. The Church was one of the main distributors of charity during the medieval period and gave out alms – such as money or food – to the poor and needy.
